Author Interview with Rayanne Haines for "Magic Born" with Xpresso Book Tours!

Magic Born

Rayanne Haines

(The Guardian Series, #2)

Publication date: June 6th 2018
Genres: Adult, Paranormal, Romance

Maria Del Voscova is a powerful witch with a past. When she’s asked to become a member of the elite Guardians she knows she can’t risk sharing the truth about her messed-up family. But we don’t always get what we want. Sometimes, we don’t always know what we want.

Though Mar absolutely knows she doesn’t want Neeren, King of the Parthen. She alone sees the darkness in him and it reminds her too much of the past. She knows better than to fall for his stoic, tortured soul façade.

She’s training to be a Guardian, a shadow; tasked with keeping the balance between good and evil in the world. It’s what she wants—to be better than her family was.

But the past has a way of catching up to Mar and the future has a morbid sense of humor. On her first mission, she’s kidnapped by the enemy she’s been running from her entire life. Thankfully the guardians look after their own. As it turns out, so does Neeren.

As Mar finds herself caught between the past and the future; between blood and bond; between the light and the dark, she realizes her only chance at surviving may be in trusting a man who is the most dangerous of them all.

Author Interview

JS: Hey Rayanne, thanks so much for introducing Magic Born to us! I love how you blend unique supernatural beings like Elements & Witches with your typical Urban Fantasy characters. Where did your inspiration for the immortal Guardians come from?

RH: Hi and thank you so much for having me! It’s difficult for me to say with any firm response exactly where they came from. I often feel like I dream these beings into creation and they become more real, more complex with each sentence I write. I’m discovering the world as I write it a lot of the time.

JS: Magic Born is a blend of urban fantasy with mythical folklore. Have you always been drawn to this genre as a reader? If so, what books in the genre have influenced you on your journey to becoming an author?

RH: I’m absolutely a fan of Patricia Briggs. Her Mercy Thompson series has been a huge influence for me. I would say however the I’ve been drawn to Magic and Fantasy for as long as I can remember. Greek and Norse Legends, in particular, have always fascinated me.

JS: I'm a huge mythology fan myself, so I'm excited to see how you weave these elements together! Who would you choose as your mascot/avatar/spirit Animal?

RH: Without question, a Raven.  Raven’s are highly inquisitive. In one indigenous legend, it is said that Raven’s are born white but then black because of taking on peoples sorrow for them. As a mother, I relate to this on so many levels.

JS: On your website, you talked about re-enacting scenes from Anne of Green Gables to your goats and horses. What other life experiences helped prepare you for the stories you have and plan to write?

R.H: Growing up a farm kid influenced so much of my creativity. I lived in nature, our home was surrounded by woods and a creek that I’ve always been certain was a fairy forest. I just think growing up a country kid with virtually no tv, fed my creative spirit.

JS: You talk about wanting to help women overcome adversity in their lives. What are some words of wisdom you could pass to our audience?

R.H: Words of Wisdom are difficult because each of us is going through our own thing and we come from such diverse backgrounds and cultures. I will offer this - you don’t have to climb mountains, unless you want to. If all you can do today is watch the sun hang lazily in the sky, then that is enough.

If you can, find your tribe, those people who will understand you. Join a club, take a class, look for that support system. If finances or other circumstances won't allow that, then look into online organizations or free classes at libraries.

JS: Are your characters based on people you know, or simply friends that play about in your head? How much of your series is based on true events?

R.H: I think they are all a mixture of people I know and make believe friends. There is always a lot of truth in my books. I write about dragons, shifters and other immortals but humanity lies at the heart of it all. Also, the bulldog in Magic Born is a complete replica if my own bulldog.

JS: How has poetry and public speaking strengthened your storytelling skills? Do you ever feel like you could have been a bard in a past life? ;)

R.H: I’m sure I was in theatre in a past life! For a long time, I thought I’d be on in this life. I do feel like the best stories have that sense of connection in them and I always hear my characters voices speaking when I’m writing their dialogue so it’s like to story is being told to me. As a poet, I’m invited often to read/present at festivals and on panels. I feel like If I can’t draw that emotion out of people, that sense of connection then I’ve done something wrong.

JS: Could you share any upcoming projects you have planned next with us?

R.H: I am currently working on book three in the series, titled Air Born. I’ve also just been named a feature author with my local library. As part of that, I’ll be offering a workshop on finding voice as a writer and a panel on what makes poetry, poetry. There’s a lot on the go ;)

JS: Thanks so much for visiting with us today, Rayanne. Best of luck with the rest of your tour! Keep reading for more about the author below.

Launch - Note from the Author

Welcome to the tour for Queen of Iron and Blood, book two in the Shattered Realms series! It was a thrill to continue the story of plucky heroine Mackenzie Scott, her younger brother Riley, and the complicated creatures who invaded their world...

A black-winged bird slammed into the glass inches from Hannah’s face, the noise making her fingers tighten around the stock of her M4. She wanted to turn away from the window, from the disingenuousness of that promising sky, and cross the darkened room. But Hannah was on watch. She straightened, eyes narrowed against the light of a hidden sun, and another bird smacked into the glass with a dull thud.

Thud. Thud, thud, thud.

"Wright has a true gift for telling compelling stories with intriguing characters. Shattered Realms is no exception. In many ways, this may be my favorite story she's told to date. With enough stakes and action to keep you guessing, this is the fairypocalypse amalgamation dystopian fans didn't know they were missing."

An Indie Adventure - Excerpt

Hannah pulled the gun up to her shoulder, leaving a good ten feet between her and that glass.
She’d never wanted to join the army. She never would have.

Now she didn’t have a choice...

“Captain!” she yelled a third time, irritation clear in her voice as she pushed her helmet away from her brow. The captain came up behind her, finally, his boots muted against the damp concrete floor.

“What is it, Mitchell?”

“Birds,” she told him.

He shifted, coming into her peripheral as two more bodies slammed against the glass. He nodded. “It’s happening at East Creek, too. Nothing to be alarmed about.”

"I loved how it was written. You can actually picture the scenes as you read them. You feel like you are right there breathing the air, feeling the anxiety.

I am definitely going to reading more by this author."

What types of plants, animals, or sentient races might we encounter in the dying lands that we don’t see on Earth?

The Iron Bound are a race of chimeras, each varied and unique, though many resemble a patchwork of creatures akin to those on Earth. In addition to stealing this realm’s energy, the Iron Bound also bring over flora, which transforms into something otherworldly when exposed to the dying lands power.

Weeks after the original invasion, after the Breach and all that followed, Hannah had been in one of the trucks sent to ground zero. She had known the other soldiers for only a matter of days, but they were not easy days. She and a seventeen-year-old redhead named Riley had become close. She’d relied on him, she realized later, in a way she’d never meant to. And when Riley had told her what happened, when it had turned out he needed her, Hannah could not keep herself from promising she would help. She didn’t think she regretted it, but it was hard to be sure.

Wishful Endings - Review

"QUEEN OF IRON AND BLOOD is another thrilling adventure as war continues between two realms, risking not only humanity on earth but also those who live in the other realm. Non-stop action, endearing and fierce characters, and an uphill battle with everything at risk makes for an engaging story from start to finish. A fantastic sequel that will leave readers hoping for more to come in this magical world! . . . I enjoyed every single minute."

Her fingers tightened around the M4 at the memory. She’d never shot a man before, but her mother and father had shown her how it was done. She had hit a target enough to know she’d aimed correctly. But the bullet had missed. Hunter, that being from a hole in the sky, had curved its trajectory around him. Her gun was useless, she knew it, and yet Hannah stood in this darkened room and gripped it like it was the end of the world. Because it was the end of the world.

She hadn’t told them about, Hunter, who had brought them to safety before he’d opened the gate. She hadn’t told them about how he’d saved Hannah and the others, how he’d gotten countless men to run and hide and stay safely out of the way. The creature had brought them here, behind the shelter of this reinforced glass, his eyes glowing with a light so blue that each of them could see it was unnatural, and they’d been so terrified they’d followed him anyway. No one had included it in their report. Hannah didn’t know if it was because the creature had saved them...

Riley had kept the wound a secret, hidden from everyone so he could join the troops and fight. But when the gateway started to pull, she’d seen him moving toward it, trying to leave the safety of their shelter. She’d misunderstood at first, thought he’d been going after his sister, to help her escape the storm. Hannah’s fingers had clawed into Riley’s shirt as he fought her, tearing the material to reveal a duct-tape-covered arm. It had been hot, buzzing, and suddenly she’d known what he’d been hiding all along. Riley had been Marked.

Colorimetry - Excerpt

“I remember thinking, ‘This is it,’” she told her captain. “‘This is where they drop the bomb. Where we all die.’” She swallowed hard, waiting for the next bird to hit the glass like a child counting the seconds between lightning and thunder. It didn’t come.

“They didn’t drop a bomb,” he said.

For one brief moment, there had been pure hope. Rejoice. Relief. Weeping. An effort to regroup.

And then came the attacks. Systematic. Orderly. Pointed. They hit strategic targets: power plants, tech firms, supply routes. It was the worst thing they could imagine, the scariest turn of events. These were not the initial attacks. The monsters weren’t merely beasts playing with their prey. This was intelligent. Deliberate.

“Captain,” Hannah asked, “what do you think happened to them?”

She didn’t have to say it. The Marked had been heavy on the minds of everyone since the first night: why had they been chosen? Were they picked at random, just to die? Once they’d been taken through the gateway, it was clear it wasn’t anything like rapture. It had been an otherworldly hole in the sky, gaping and huge and glittering like stardust. Not heaven. Not angels.

A void. And monsters.

My Review

5 of 5 Stars

In the first Shattered Realms novel Mackenzie and Hunter, two people from different worlds, collide in a magical apocalypse. Now, in Queen of Iron and Blood, Mackenzie is left to watch over the Undying Lands while Hunter returns to Earth. There's still the Iron Bound to deal with, after all, and the former king. Not to mention the human army that very much wants Hunter dead.

"Mackenzie was queen of the Iron Bound. She was tied to this realm, responsible for it the way she’d been responsible for Riley as a child. Not because no one else would do it, but because she couldn’t not do it. It was not in her to run away."

In the first book, Mackenzie was all about saving her brother, Riley. Her connection with Hunter was born out of necessity for survival. With the world ending, there wasn't much time for romance. But it's enough to convince Hunter he wants her by his side. Even if he only made her queen to save her life. Now, Mackenzie is reunited with Riley, and dumped with a heap of responsibilities she never asked. Rather than cave in under the pressure, however, she stands up to the challenge. It was so much fun watching our heroine come into her power and just what being queen means. While I hated that she and Hunter were separated, I loved her growth as a character. Hunter likewise, is forced to confront the demons of his past, so he and his people can have a future. He has spent enough time on Earth to share sympathy with the humans, but he's met his match in Hannah, the girl who tried to kill him.

"No matter what else she might be, Hannah was a soldier now. She would fight for her home. She would fight for her family. No matter what came next."

If you don't remember Hannah, she is Riley's friend and fellow teen soldier from the first book. And in my opinion, she steals the show in Queen of Iron and Blood. Hannah is no-nonsense and a born survivor. Which is a good thing, when your commander decides not to trust you. Left to make her own judgments, Hannah decides to join forces with Hunter. But they quickly realize they make the perfect team. I confess I wasn't sure where the author would lead these characters. All I know, and this is the most important thing really, is I was anxious to learn what happened next.

I'm a huge Melissa Wright fan. Her fantasy novel, Frey was one of the first Kindle books I ever purchased and I've read everything she's written since. Wright has a true gift for telling compelling stories with intriguing characters. Shattered Realms is no exception. In many ways, this may be my favorite story she's told to date. With enough stakes and action to keep you guessing, this is the fairypocalypse amalgamation dystopian fans didn't know they were missing.

 Jennifer Silverwood

(Seven Deadly Sins, #1)

Her guardian, Etlu, is determined to make Eanna into a queen, even if it means sacrificing his happiness. He pursues her into a human bar, but he’s too late to save her from herself.
Wil and his sister, Isabol, have been searching for the chosen princess. Wil finds more than he bargained for in Eanna, especially once her powerful guardian shows up. There can only be one outcome when chosen and cursed collide: a world bathed in fire and blood.
(Angel Blue is a serialized adult urban fantasy novel consisting of three episodes. This is season one of the Seven Deadly Sins series.)

A GAME OF HOUSES

For ten generations our people have been called the Chosen.

The first chosen were like gods to humans. We were the rulers, and kings among men. The world changed after what man called the Dark Ages. Power was shifting. Once we were leaders among the humans, heroes of old and men of renown, a vast sprinkling among the stars that I love. The world it seemed, was our own, to watch over and do with as we pleased.

We are a dwindling race now. Unlike the cursed, we are unable to blend in with the humans any longer, and for the past three centuries have remained in hiding. We live by the old ways and survive. Here, in the isolated northern forests of the new world, we thrive. Much has changed since then. Eleven hundred human years later, I still feel the pain of that night that changed the course of my destiny forever.

The Last Seven Houses

KURGAL – House of the MountainLed by NINURTA – Lord Who Completes the Foundation

The Kurgal live deep in the Himalayas. Here they are still revered by neighboring humans who make effort to protect them. The chosen keep the outside world from coming in. Etlu brought Eanna here a century after fleeing the Carpathian Mountains. It was a place familiar to them both with its impossible peaks but far more dangerous and foreign. Ninurta taught Eanna how to inflict pain and then heal it, he taught her self-control for her rage. Etlu meanwhile learned all he could of the cursed movements in the countryside. He built allies and led their armies for a time to prevent the giant beasts from destroying human villages. He began to realize that his House did not have far-reaching enough abilities of control and began to grow discontent even more with the Sarrum.

SHIIMTI – House Where the Wind of Life is Breathed inLed by NINLIL – Lady of Airspace

The Shiimti, live deep in the jungles of India. There they still live, where they began a lost civilization man has yet to unravel. Their palace holds many of India’s treasures and clues that might possibly be directed back toward the chosen. Here Etlu and Eanna come to visit after they leave the Kurgal, to find a far larger House. Yet even more secretive. The only reason they are allowed inside is that both are considered pure blooded, but Ninlil sees secrets in Eanna’s heart. She is the first to have any inkling of just who Eanna is.
Among the Shiimti, women rule over the men, and there are three layers to every member. The first, is the outer persona they show strangers, welcoming but aloof and cool. The second, to those in the inner circle, the secrets deemed worthy to share. The third is kept guarded above all else, the soul. Shiimti is the only House that believes they all lay claim to their own souls. Because they face the present darkness every day in their jungles.

EBABBAR – House of the Rising SunLed by NINGISHZIDDA – Lord of the Artifact of Life

It lies hidden in a small oasis within Iran, where Sumer, the society the Watchers created, began. It is an underground city mostly, beginning from the base of a lost Ziggurat. The underground world is actually a paradise and a world of beauty. It is here that the Ebabbar keep most of the old relics and scrolls. It is the best defended and considered a safe haven by others of their society.

EKUR – House Which is Like a MountainLed by NINHURSAG – Lady of the Mountainhead

The Ekur are the most numerous of the Houses. They are also the proudest, for most lesser come from this house, and serve the “pure-blooded” chosen. To the Ekur, to serve is the greatest honor. Most of the soldiers and weaponsmiths also come from this House. Ninhursag, their Lady, is a proud warrior herself, and of extremely high stature, eight feet in height. Their base of operation is in Siberia and extends far into the north in lands that man deemed inhabitable.

EMEURANNA – House of ANU’s HeroLed by The Sarrum

The Emeuranna are led by the Sarrum himself, and his people. This is the only surviving chosen castle in the Carpathian Mountains, sheltered far from the outside world. The old ways are kept mostly intact here, as is custom for the High Lord’s seat. Here the Council of Seven makes overall decisions for the rest of the chosen. They now have the best defense against the cursed.

ERESH – The Scented HouseLed by NINIGIKU- Lord Bright Eyed

One of the last new world Houses left in power, hidden deep in the Amazon rainforest, and source of the legends of El Dorado. The richest of all the Houses by far. They are bronze-skinned and every one of them black-eyed. They have not intermarried with the humans hardly at all, there is no need. Unique to all other houses save the rumored lost eighth House, their memories are shared collectively if they desire, their movements always calculated. Any time they intermarry with other Houses it is a very chess-like move, to bring back strength to their kind. While staying among them, Eanna learns she is closely related to them.

GISNU – House Causing LightLed by NINMULMULLA – Lady of Many Stars

The Gisnu were the first of the thirteen houses to journey across the lands to the ever growing and developing new world. They were also the first beings to settle there, after the Native Americans. Once based in the Northlands among the Vikings, the Gisnu set up their home in the north of what is now Canada. It is here that they have remained, and for a thousand years protected the forests, and peoples around them as best they could. They are more advanced than any of the other Houses, keeping themselves updated with the latest technology.

Book Review + Giveaway: When Time Stands Still by Sara Furlong Burr

When Time Stands Still by Sara Furlong Burr

Publication date: June 15th 2018
Genres: Adult, Contemporary, Romance

It’s been nearly a decade since Elle Sloan last saw Luke Hutchins. Close to ten years since she broke up with him over a single phone call, providing him with little explanation. Since the end of their relationship, Elle has done everything she could do to move on, marrying, proceeding forward with her life, almost allowing herself to completely forget about Luke.
Almost.
Out of nowhere, Elle receives a phone call from Luke’s mother. Luke has been in a horrific car accident and, a month later, has just awoken from a coma. However, instead of celebrating, his family is stunned to learn that Luke is suffering from amnesia and only remembers his life as it was before his breakup with Elle. Not wanting to tell Luke that he and Elle aren’t together anymore for fear it may compromise his recovery, Elle is asked by Luke’s family to come to the hospital to see him. Their hope is that she will slowly be able to jog his memory and cushion the blow.
Guilt-ridden over how their relationship ended, Elle readily agrees, finding herself transported back in time with Luke to the life they once shared and the future they could have had together.

My Review

5 of 5 Stars

Sometimes, it's impossible to know how to begin to describe a book that touches your heart. All I know is I read something beautiful and real and heartbreaking at once. Maybe because I'm of an age with the main characters and related so much to their stories, their lives. Or maybe because it reminded me of a piece of myself I'd forgotten. Either way, Burr has given us a gift with When Time Stands Still.

Before you start thinking me too dramatic, let me argue my case. This is much more than your typical "second chances" trope. It's a lot less about sex and romance than it's about what happens when we stop believing in ourselves. When we choose to give in to the doubts in our heads that we don't deserve happiness, and forget how to fight for ourselves. Elle has given up and doesn't know it until she's called back to the only place that felt like home. Forced to pretend the last decade doesn't exist, thrown together with the family she didn't know she missed, causes her to second-guess herself. To second-guess her life. Nothing prepares her for seeing Luke again. Somewhere between memories of their epic love and pretending to live in the past with him fuses together the pieces of her heart she lost. And the result is beautiful.

I have to hand it to the author because there were several times I couldn't guess the ending. Normally that wouldn't be a question with a contemporary romance, especially "second chance" romance. But there was just enough tragedy and enough realism, I wondered if we would find happy-ever-after or not. I don't want to spoil the ending for you, but I can say I wish there had been more. While this was a quick and easy read, I felt lost at the end and wanted more time with these characters. This is the sort of story you want to fall into, which considering its modern setting is saying a lot. But it was a bittersweet nostalgia trip for me, personally. Like Elle, I wondered what would happen if I was forced to confront my own past. Here is the brilliance of Burr's writing. I should stop talking now before I really spoil you for this book. Don't take my word for it. Read it and love it. I know you will.
