The Caledonian Inheritance (The Athena Effect #3)The Caledonian Inheritance by Derrolyn Anderson
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

At the end of The Mackenzie Legacy, our new family unit of Calvin and Caledonia & twins Layla and Michael have escaped their enemies.
The Caledonian Inheritance starts not long after, with the quartet settled in a house and slowly rebuilding the missing pieces of their lives.
It was nice to see Michael come into his own instead of acting like the bitter and selfish character he has been so far. You really get a chance to see his love for his sister and his inner strength flourish outwardly.
Calvin mostly serves to support Cali and unlike the last novel, is now the primary voice of reason.
Caledonia finally gets the chance to work with animals instead of wasting her talents gambling. I loved watching the shift of emotions or colors she and Layla see in one another. Before we mostly had to rely on Cali's perspective without watching her. It was also fun watching her childhood skills come into play, particularly the moment she pulls a knife out of nowhere.
Layla's additional perspective continues to enrich and strengthen this series. Again I found her story the most intriguing, perhaps because she's such a flawed but fun character. She hides behind a polished, prissy exterior but is vulnerable after the events of Mackenzie Legacy. Her crusade to rebuild her grandmother's home was interesting, and teased us with hints of the cousins's ancestral origins in Scotland.
Officer Ruiz was a nice addition to the crew. Besides being delectable eye candy, he is an honorable guy and very interested three dimensional hero. His laid back, genuine approach was the perfect foil to Layla's A-type personality.
Looking forward to reading the next installment and learning more about these witchy women and their adventures.
Derrolyn Anderson continues to impress and draw the reader in with compelling characters, heartfelt romance and ingenuity.

Twelve Dancing UnicornsTwelve Dancing Unicorns by Alissa Heyman
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I bought Twelve Dancing Unicorns for my seven-year-old niece, who has a penchant for all things magical. Naturally, I read the book before hand and fell in love with the gorgeous illustrations and innocent sweetness of the story. The illustrations are stunning and display the artist's gift for contrast and light. This is the ideal gift for girls of all ages who dare to believe in the power of love and magic.

Review for Derrolyn Anderson's "The Mackenzie Legacy" (Athena Effect #2)

The Mackenzie Legacy (The Athena Effect, #2)The Mackenzie Legacy by Derrolyn Anderson
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Fantastic sequel to The Athena Effect! It had been a few years since I read the first book of this series, but I had no problem diving back into the world Anderson as crafted. Much like her series, "Marina Tales", Athena Effect remains strong throughout, rather than lagging as some sequels do. While I enjoyed Cal and Cali's adventures across the Pacific Northwest and Nevada, I really wanted to know what was happening with the twins this time around.
The Mackenzie Legacy is packed with even more action and suspense than its predecessor and keeps the reader hooked until the spellbinding climax. I wasn't prepared for the big reveal when it came, yet pleasantly surprised by the new twist. Love the way Anderson brought elements from the first book and gave them new meaning in the sequel. She truly has a gift for weaving complex plots with multiple characters.
While I wanted to beat certain characters in the head a few times, the boys in particular, I was happy to see them grow and learn from their mistakes.
Anderson gives us a closer look into the past and the powers these characters possess and promises more in the next installment.
I couldn't wait to read "Caledonian Inheritance" and plan to start reading my new copy tonight.
A must read for any fans of paranormal romances and thrillers!
